I got the same results from my experiment earlier this evening (DL-ing the pets exactly as you describe).

I'm guessing you mean that you intentionally aggroed both the black wolf and the regular wolf? I seem to recall that if you start charming a black wolf, the regular wolf will not go hostile.
In any case, if you have multiple pets of the same type, they'll all split the experience, making the process a whole lot slower. For instance, I death leveled some flamingos the other night. With four of them in the area, it took over an hour to get them to level 20. I'll point out that it wasn't exactly four times as long, but that's due to the fact that they would wander outside of aggro occasionally (and of course the ones still in aggro would therefore not split the XP four ways).

Take your armor off, Bring a hero and disable all skills except for a resurrect. Now aggro the pet and then go afk for a half hour and come back and you're done.
Simple.

Oooh, this is helpful.
Trying it out with a level 12. Eventually you and your heroes end up in a happy medium:

Edit: It ended up Elder. Curses!

Ah there, Menagerie is complete, excluding Rainbow Phoenix which, as someone pointed out, there's no way to death level. Took me about a day give or take.
I was wondering, if you pay the 10$ for the Menagerie unlock, does it give you all of the non-prestige pets' at level 20 with all evolutions open or just gets the level 5 versions into the Menagerie?

You'll get all pet skins (excluding prestige) and they'll be available from the NPC at lvl20 and with all possible evolutions.

I had the same problem in reverse with taking level 12 playful pets to level on the wurms. They kept turning elder at level 14, despite taking a great deal of damage and doing almost none while I killed the wurms. I was able to get a couple of 12-aggressive to go dire at level 14, though. I plan to set up a research program to see if I can figure out some of the rules behind pet evolution, since the old rulebook seems be have gone out the window.

My research on pet leveling so far has found that the number of players affects pet XP gain. I'm currently leveling a pet with a hero in the party (set on passive), and the pet is gaining XP at half the rate it does when I level solo, even though there is still only one pet. I will do at least one more trial in this round to confirm. In the next round of tests I plan to give the hero a pet to see if that has a further effect on my pet's XP.
I'm thinking of "pre-conditioning" the hero's pet for a hearty evolution by damaging it before charming, as you explained above, and then leaving it on passive while leveling mine on the wurms. Regardless of the effect on XP gain, I will be interested to see how it levels and evolves.
Your experience with the flamingos is interesting, but I wonder if the pets really have to be of the same type. It's amazing that a group of uncharmed animals is apparently considered a party for splitting XP. It's also a surprise that they must be in the aggro bubble, since we know that a charmed pet does not have to even be alive and in radar range to get XP.

Yeah, it works. With 2 rezmers and one hero with Blood Renewal (WITHOUT Well of Power coz it negates degen from vampiric weapon) you can be afk all the time and deathleveling last only ~20 minutes. Of course pet is hearty, so this evolution unlocks rest of all. Nice!

So basically you can deliver one hit to each pet in the menagerie, go summon 4 level 20 dire pets, attack them and get killed again and again untill all of them level up to 20?

But that's after charming, if I'm reading your post right.
It should also be noted that the menagerie animals are odd to begin with. In a normal explorable, if you aggro one crocodile (for example), the others do not also become hostile.

I'd say that the pets are the odd duck here (i.e., pets are the surprise). Normal experience gain for players, heroes and monsters requires them to be within the aggro circle. Charmed pets are unique in the respect that they gain experience while dead, and unique that range doesn't matter for experience gain.
So I'm referring to the hostile flamingos in the menagerie. Once you charm them and turn them into real pets, the experience rules all change.

For the animals that you have at level 20 elder already:
Black Widow
Black Moa
and
PvP Wolf usualy
I find that Dire is the easy way to go. Take 3 rezzers, forget the necro, make sure your monk rezzer has charm. Summon level 15 Dires. Go stand near the outside gate and flag your heroes right behind you then aggro an animal with a bow or staff.
It'll kill you the first time (Make sure you have 1 hp before starting this), but then to keep it's dire status, it will take a good few hits on your rezzers. However, they are out of range so it will only get 0-1 hits in before warping back. So it wont kill your rezzers.

For Elder pets I just did the Zaishen training, and got 2000 Balthazar faction, and unlocked the Dire/Hearty/Aggressive/Playful evolutions that way. Ten or fifteen minutes per day -- I didn't feel the need to unlock all evolutions on the same day. Whatever works.

No, it doesn't do much damage so the pet will regen after a few seconds.

- I'm pretty sure charmed pets gain XP whenever their owner is awarded XP for a kill (even if that is zero). So the pet can be anywhere, but the pet master can't. So yeah, the rules for charmed animals are quite different.
- I don't see the advantage of these heal rezzes compared to two me/rts constantly fleshing. Yes flesh technically takes longer to cast, but it has zero recharge, and there aren't issues with them deciding between other skills to use. When you die in less than a second, the recharge is an issue. You don't even need emanage with 2 resmers since one will cover the other when the energy is lacking.
- The pet groups do share XP so kill off all but one when they turn red, that will speed your leveling considerably.

I found easier just to unlock the levels Balthazar Faction. It is faster and you can do so by increasing other titles and making ZQuests.

Yes. You can show hero pets to the tamer and she will unlock whatever tiers are appropriate to their level and evolution. I added the white and black moas to the menagerie from my ranger's heroes, and neither of those moas had ever been charmed by any of my characters prior to that. The white moa was level 20 dire and unlocked tier 7, while the black was the original 20-elder one from Echovald and unlocked tier 6.
